What goes into Dragon's Eye Blue glaze?

6 steps, drawn by Nib. Read it here, or watch him draw it.

1the glaze

Dragon's Eye Blue is another famous cone 6 glaze — it pools deep midnight blue in the crevices and breaks lighter on high spots.

2base + colorants

Like most glazes, it starts as a base of melters and stiffeners, then a small dose of coloring oxides does the magic.

3feldspar · flux

Custer feldspar is again the main flux, melting the mix into glass, alongside neph sy for extra flow.

4silica + kaolin

Silica and EPK kaolin hold the structure — silica stiffens the glass, kaolin keeps it suspended and clinging to the pot.

5whiting + gerstley

Whiting and gerstley borate soften the melt further, letting it flow just enough to pool thick in the low spots.

6cobalt · rutile

Cobalt carbonate gives the deep blue, and rutile again softens it into that dragon-eye mottle and cloud.

Same family of flux, stiffener, and clay as Don's Rutile — but cobalt swaps the honey glow for deep dragon-eye blue.
