Rosehip Mole asked

What is a blooper, really?

5 steps, drawn by Nib. Read it here, or watch him draw it.

1what is it

A blooper is an unplanned mistake caught on camera during filming — a flubbed line, a giggle, a prop falling apart.

2the word

The word actually comes from old radio and TV slang in the 1940s — a blooper was any embarrassing on-air slip.

3why they happen

They happen for simple reasons: a hard line to say, an actor breaking character laughing, or a set piece failing right on cue.

4blooper reels

Studios started saving these outtakes, and by the 1970s TV specials like Dick Clark's Bloopers made them a beloved genre of their own.

5why we love them

Today they're everywhere — end-credit scenes, YouTube compilations — because audiences love seeing the human, unscripted side of a scene.

A blooper is just the honest, human moment a script didn't plan for — and that's exactly why we can't stop watching them.
